At the Significance 2.0 Workshop on 30 April we were told that the methodology is also being used in Vietnam and Africa. Margie Burn
Ms Burn explains how a relatively small proportion of library materials are suitable for significance assessment, and that Significance (2001) is a useful guide to libraries when there is a need to assess significance e.g. to nominate an item or collection for internal or external registers and to set priorities (for disaster planning, digitization or conservation treatment / Memory of the World), to apply for grants or to inform acquisition decisions.

Risk assessment and management were developed to deal with undesirable change. These techniques have been used particularly in business, but also within government and other organisations e.g. emergency management agencies, insurance companies.

Mr Archer believes that risk management is becoming more relevant to the conservation and management of collections. He refers to a proposed approach to one aspect of sustainable collection management at the National Museum of Australia, which is predicated upon significance assessment.
